Object permanence, or lack thereof, and how I left my purse 60 miles away

Object permanence is the awareness that objects continue to exist even when they are no longer visible. It develops in infants around eight or nine months of age. For example, if the baby's mom hides behind a blanket before she has attained object permanence, she might get upset because she can't see her mom and believes she isn't there (out of sight, out of mind. Literally). But after object permanence takes hold, the baby realizes that Mom is still in the room, even if she can't see her.

Anyway, I'm becoming (in a joking manner) convinced that my object permanence never fully developed. If I can't see something, I forget about it. Even if I desperately need it.

Case en pointe: my water bottle at the movie theatre.

And more recently, my purse. You know, your purse with your wallet (all your money, ID, pictures), your makeup, and if you're like me, your earrings, really important stuff. And if I can't see my purse, I forget about it and leave it sixty miles behind me on the freeway.

I'm scared crapless for when I have children; I'll either leave a kid or something vital like a diaper bag somewhere. It's bad enough at CAST when I forget things like forks and cups, but for heaven's sake, my purse! Come on!

So thanks a million to my patient and obliging father, who drove to B'ham twice in two days, the second time just to deliever my purse.
